MOFCOM and UN’s Representative Office in China Jointly Held a Symposium on the International Experience for Post-quake Restoration

On July 14-15, 2008, China’s Ministry of Commerce and UN’s Representative Office in China jointly held a Symposium on the International Experience for Post-quake Restoration in Beijing. The significant international experts and scholars on post-quake restoration were invited to the Symposium to exchange the experiences on the international experience of post-quake restoration, sustainable factors that shall be considered in the restoration, restoration of local economic order, the program for assisting the poor and vulnerable group, and the restoration of public services, etc.

Assistant Minister of Commerce Qiu Hong was present at the Symposium. Qiu said, the international organizations including the UN, all national governments and people all extended condolence and support to China after the quake occurred, meanwhile they provided all kinds of relief assistance on labor, money and materials, which we shall greatly appreciated.

Qiu pointed out that the post-quake restoration was an urgent and long-time mission. Chinese government attached great importance to the restoration work that the State Council had set up the Regulation on Wenchuan Post-quake Restoration and Reconstruction25 days after the disaster occurred. The Working Scheme on Programming the Restoration of Wenchuan and the Guiding Opinion on Doing a Good Job in the Post-quake Restoration Work in Wenchuan were brought forward in succession, which clearly put forward the instructing idea, basic principle, main task and working requirement.

Qiu expressed that Chinese government and people should be incumbent on the working of restoration and reconstruction in quake-hit areas, work hard and be self-dependent. Meanwhile the international community was welcomed to joined in, especially played the predominant role in capable construction, development of finance and public management restoration, etc, for providing more support and assistance to China’s post-quake restoration.

The coordinator of UN’s Representative Office in China Ma Heli said, Chinese government had showed its great responsibility and capability in the relief and rescue work, and the restoration and reconstruction in quake-hit areas has achieved huge progress. The excellent work was showed in post-quake restoration work done by Chinese leaders, heads from the ministries and local governments. We appraised the transparent and responsible pattern that Chinese government took in responding the quake disaster. In addition, the international communities, non-governmental organizations and many other individuals had provided assistance to China’s rescue and relief work. The Symposium aimed to settle actual problems, exchange international experience, and participate in China’s post-quake restoration.

Nearly 150 representatives from such ministries as MOFCOM, National Development and Reform Commission, Ministry of Civil Affairs, and Ministry of Public Health, the Government of Sichuan, Gansu and Shaanxi Provinces, relative organizations of the UN, some foreign embassies to China and some international non-governmental organizations participated in the Symposium.
